Job Market Outlook for the Rest of the Year

SAN ANTONIO, TX—July 28, 2009 - If you are looking for a job or to change careers, the health care, personal care, and home care sectors are currently the hottest industries, while smaller, entrepreneurial businesses hold the most potential for growing during the rest the year, according to OI Partners, Venturion, a global career transition and coaching firm.

The job-search techniques that are producing the best results locally include conducting “discovery meetings” with potential employers, and using social networking websites to identify contacts within targeted companies and possible jobs that have not been posted or advertised, said Don Huse, Managing Partner of OI Partners, Venturion (San Antonio).

According to the OI Partners, Venturion Local Job Market Outlook, which covers current and future hottest industries and job-search techniques:

- Hottest industries right now: “The health care industry continues to expand to meet increased demand caused by the needs of an aging population. There are also employment opportunities as personal and home care aides, such as homemakers, caregivers, companions, and personal attendants. They help people who are elderly, disabled, ill, and/or mentally disabled to live in their own homes or in residential care facilities instead of in health facilities or institutions. These health care-related fields are expected to continue growing as health insurance becomes available to more people,” said Huse.
- Weakest industries right now: “The manufacturing industry has been hit particularly hard by automotive-related cutbacks. In addition, professional services fields such as legal and accounting have been over-staffed and have experienced business declines,” Huse said.

- Industries becoming hot in next 6 months: “Smaller, entrepreneurial businesses will be among the first to expand during the rest of the year, especially those that may see increased business due to the economic stimulus package, such as in construction, building, engineering, and green technology firms,” said Huse.

- Job-search techniques working best right now: “Job-seekers are having some success by asking for a targeted discovery or referral interview to find out what companies needs may be. Also, job-seekers are more often using social networking websites to identify contacts within targeted companies and possible jobs that have not been posted or advertised. Utilize different methods to identify these internal contacts who can be helpful in getting your resume reviewed,” said Huse.

- Additional advice for job-seekers: “Approach your employment search as a full-time project that must succeed. It’s best to concentrate on companies that are growing and hiring. Also, people should focus more on how to differentiate their ‘brand’ – what makes them different, and how they can make an immediate impact on a potential employer. It’s very important for job-seekers to know what is going on in the local business community, and to develop some expertise and knowledge of key industries so they can position themselves as viable candidates,” said Huse.
